Xmas Ornaments
|

These Christmas ornaments are easy and inexpensive to make, though they are time consuming. The recipe is basically for home-made play-dough ornaments that you bake until they harden, and then you paint them when they're cool. The ornaments took me about a day to make; there are a few stages to this, though. Here's what you will need:
- Two cups of flour
- One cup of salt
- One cup of water
- A few bottles of acrylic paint (available at any art store or hobby shop)
- A paintbrush
- Craft varnish or sealant (I used Fimo glaze)
- Ribbon, string, or wire
OR if you want to use the alternative method:
- Two cups of flour
- One cup of salt
- One cup of water
- A few teapoons of cinnamon or vanilla extract
- Food colouring
- Ribbon, string, or wire
Method
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (163 degrees Celsius).
- Mix salt and flour.
- Add in half the water, then gradually add the remaining water. Mix with a fork.
- Knead until the dough is smooth, this can take up to 10 minutes.
- Roll out the dough thinly on baking paper (parchment paper).
- Use the rim of a small glass to cut out our circles, then drag the dull blade of a knife across the surface of the ornament to etch in a ReBoot icon. Don't forget to use a straw to poke a hole in the dough for hanging later.
- Place on baking sheet; no need to worry about placing them far apart. They will not rise and therefore can be placed closely together.
- Bake for approximately one and a half hours, or until dough is completely hard.
- Let cool completely before decorating.
- Paint with acrylics as you like.
- When completely dry, paint glaze over entire ornament.
- Thread ribbon, string, or wire through the hole you made earlier, and it's ready to hang on your tree!
Alternative Method (thanks to ReBootMaster2001)
This method is less time consuming because you do not need to paint the ornaments. Take your dough, break it up into equal sized sections for as many colours as you want and use food colouring to colour the dough, and cinnamon or vanilla to make them smell nice. (The salt dough stinks for a few days.) Here is a diagram for how you can make the icons with food-coloured dough.

You don't just have to make ReBoot icons. You can make anything you want out of them. Be creative! If you want, you can e-mail me pictures of what you made and I will post them here. Have fun!
