I must say I initially shared your concerns. That why I did some investigating and stumbled upon his email address, to which I sent this email:

Hello Jon,

As a fan of Reboot, I must say that I'm a little concerned to know that you've been hired to write the script for the upcoming Reboot movie. Not to question your ability as a writer, (I have not seen any of your work) but how could someone with presumably no existing knowledge of the Reboot universe write the comeback movie for all of Reboot's loyal fans? Am I mistaken and not aware that you are a fan of Reboot yourself? I certainly hope so. I notice that a lot of your writing credits are in tv shows for children. Please note that Reboot's main fanbase has aged 10 years by now, and that most of us are not children anymore. Any comments on how qualified you feel to write this story would be greatly appreciated, Jon.

Regards,
             A worried fan.

Jon promptly responded to me with this:

Hi Jim,

I understand your concern about Reboot – I know I’m the guy nobody’s heard of, at least for a lot of US fans.  Those up in Canada are more likely to have seen my last series, “The Collector”, which ran here for 3 years and was definitely not a show for children – in fact I haven’t worked on any kid-oriented stuff for the last several years.  (Which is not to say I didn’t love working on Rugrats 10 years ago – that series had the unique ability to make both toddlers and adults laugh – writing songs for the live stage show with Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo was certainly some of the most fun I’ve had.)  The 3 series I’m developing now, one based on the Marvel comic “Moon Knight”, are all action/adventure with humor and romance mixed in, and all of them touch on deeper themes about heroism, love, and making our troubled world a better place.  Still being in development, of course, none of them show up on my resume yet, so I understand that what you see would give you pause!

As for Reboot, I am a fan, and I’m committed to bringing it back with a great storyline that makes it fresh and movie-size – for a broad audience, as well as all the Reboot fans who aren’t kids anymore – but still incorporates the elements that made the original series so great. I know you represent a lot of people for whom Reboot is something very special, and the people at Rainmaker Entertainment know that too, and really want to honor that.  I know they looked at a lot of writers before settling on me, and I felt really good that my take on the movie was exactly where they wanted to take it.  Mostly I wanted you to know that I take seriously my obligation to deliver a great script that pulls the whole planet into the Reboot world.

Thanks for writing!

Jon

So as you can see, Jon Cooksey does have mature writing experience, and he's a Reboot fan to boot. He's explained that he's aware of our concerns, and that he's dedicated to writing the Reboot we all know and love.

This is excellent news.  Perhaps it will silence the nay-sayers.

Thanks for that, Jim... Su?

His entire second paragraph has won my entire confidence.  I already had a decent amount of faith in him, and it appears to have paid off as my anticipation shot up 110%.

So nice of him to answer! I must say that the fact that we hadn't heard anything from him yet was one of the things that had got me worried.

I have to say, I feel a lot more confident now that this guy is going to be good for ReBoot. He seems very sincere in his desire to keep true to what made ReBoot great. I do hope we hear more from him in the future about exactly what his plans are, but for now this is a great start.

We'll see what happens when this guy. I hope the movie will be enjoyable to watch, and I always loved Rugrats

Let's get Reboot back right. Gavin, Ian, Phil, Dan, all the voice actors and animators should get to do season 5!

Wow, that's really a nice guy. I feel better about the whole thing, too. That's really cool that he wrote back so sincerely and promptly.

I am now more confident that this may not feel like Rugrats. But, he should ask the old writers for help, otherwise, it WILL end up like Thunderbirds as I predicted when he was announced!

I'm glad to hear about this writer's commitment.  I'm just keen to know what the target audienec is - the age group particularly.  I wonder if it'll be a dark ReBoot (I hope so).

I have to agree with all of you, it's really good to hear this. It was also very kind of him to actually take time to write back to you, FaceToFace. You don't see that frequently. A lot of people were (and probaly are still) concerned about Rainmaker's choice for their first writer, and Jon Cooksey sure knew about that. The ReBoot fanbase is simply too large to be dismissed. His prompt, sincere & quite professional response already puts him in favor.

Besides, anybody can name the Director that created a true box-office hit for both fans and general audience a few years ago and that was chosen not for his fame, but for his perception of the story? Same thing might've happened here with Jon Cooksey. All in all, I appreciated his answer, and I'm looking forward to see the end result. It's been way to long

That was the reason I doubted him in the first place, as I thought he wouldn't make it dark, which is the reason I love ReBoot today!

Just the fact that he wrote back is a great sign. I'm already feeling better about the whole thing— sounds like he's going to take this very seriously. Good luck, sir!
